3 Tips for becoming a successful contractor

Choosing to start your own business can be exciting and quite terrifying at the same time. With moments of shear inspiration and valleys of doubt, we often wonder how can we make this work. With a little planning and some sweat dumped into self promotion or maybe digital marketing on social media, you will land the client you have been looking for. Hopefully a few more as well, but they wont all be delightful.

Tip 1

Keep your estimates in line by estimating similarly each way you can quickly see where you can bare to spend more, or where you can cut your budget. Creating a sheet that you or your estimating department can utilize each project will help streamline your estimates.

Tip 2

Identify change orders when you first walk a job. By identifying change orders first, you can make a log of potential selling items to the client. If they choose not to accept the change, no skin off your back. Be your best salesperson, or put your best salesperson on the job.

Tip 3

Be client forward! Too many contractors think by ripping off clients or cutting corners is how you make the big bucks. This couldn't be further from the truth. Stay within scope, but always deliver quality services. Your business will suffer in the long run by not delivering the best quality work and focusing on your clients needs.
